Chandler McDowell Medals at U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier at The Club at Rock Creek

Chandler McDowell of Springbrook, Alta. shot 1-under par 71 to earn medalist honors in leading the field of 40 players who competed today in U.S. Junior Amateur Championship sectional qualifying at The Club at Rock Creek in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

McDowell played in the final group of the day, and was the only player in the field to break par on the par-72 layout. He is the only player from this sectional qualifier to now advance to compete in the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, which will be held July 16-21 at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J.

The two alternates from this qualifier are Eloy Vigil Escalera of Puebla, Mex. (first), and Hayden Gamache of Spokane, Wash. (second).

This is the first U.S. Junior Amateur that McDowell has qualified for. He competed in last year’s sectional qualifier, also held at Rock Creek, but did not make the cut.

McDowell is a freshman at Lynn University, a Division II school in Boca Raton, Fla. He graduated high school early and joined Lynn’s men’s golf team in January 2018 to compete in the school’s spring season. In 2017, he was a member of the Canadian National Development Squad, and in 2016 was a member of Team Alberta. In 2016, he tied for 14th in the Canadian Junior Boys’ Championship, and won the Albert Juvenile Boys’ Championship.

The Washington State Golf Association (WSGA) is the local representative of the United States Golf Association (USGA) and conducted this qualifier for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

The U.S. Junior Amateur is one of 14 national championships conducted annually by the USGA, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
